This session will provide an overview of proton therapy and planning fundamentals, review a case study concerning esophageal cancer with pleural effusion, and discuss methods to address uncertainty in pleural effusion management and strategies for planning esophageal cases utilizing proton therapy.

  1. Outline proton planning considerations and techniques, especially for the esophagus cases
  2. Explain ways to account for Pleural Effusions in proton planning
  3. Discuss the impact of lung fluid changes on proton plan via QACT scans

Educational Level:  Intermediate

Presenter: David Alicia, BS, CMD, is a senior medical dosimetrist at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. He has extensive experience in both proton and photon planning and serves as a dosimetry instructor in the University of Maryland Medical Center Dosimetry Program. David is a proud graduate of the Stony Brook University Medical Dosimetry Program, class of 2017. His favorite treatment site to plan is HN because of the healthy challenge it provides and the SIB aspect, which allows him to dose-paint to different targets at different levels. Outside of Dosimetry, David’s favorite hobbies include going to the gym, joining dance fitness classes, baking, and hanging out with his two cats, Prince and Lady Gaga. He is also a DMV foodie, so he appreciates any and every food recommendation.
